Coastal softball sweeps weekend against South Alabama

April 8, 2019

This past weekend the Coastal Carolina Softball team travelled to Mobile, Ala, for a weekend of softball against the Southern Alabama Lady Jaguars.

The first game was held on Friday, April 5 and the Chanticleers won 4-3. Courtney Dean, center fielder, hit her 12th homerun of the season in the top of the fifth inning, scoring three and bringing the Chanticleers to the lead. Kaitlin Beasley-Polko pitched 6 innings in the game and only gave up seven hits and three runs.

The Chanticleers wasted no time in getting runs in during their second game of the weekend on Saturday as junior first baseman Kassidy Smith hit a home run in the top of the first inning. Smith would go yard again in the top of the sixth inning, this time bringing in two runs and bringing the Chanticleers to the lead. Abbey Montoya scored again in the top of the seventh inning, bringing the final score of the game to 4-2.

The third game brought another win for the Lady Chanticleers. Taylor Sweigart was hit by the first pitch of the game. When Dean stepped up to bat, the Jaguars decided to intentionally walk her. Sweigart was the only one able to score in the first inning for either team. The Chants really showed out in the sixth inning. Stavi Augur, infielder, hit a grand slam bringing the Chanticleer to a win of 6-4 against the Jaguars. Beasley Polko also had an amazing game – only allowing for five hits and four runs.

The Chanticleers are currently sitting in fifth place in the Sun Belt Conference with a record of 9-6 and an overall record of 29-10.

The ladies next game will against University of North Carolina on April 9, in Chapel Hill, NC.

The next home game will be April 12 when the Chanticleers host Texas State at St. John Stadium.
